Thai-Indian fusion, a hit in Thailand, and now comes to swing Mumbai
The latest foreign face in the Indian film industry is pop singer Ann Mitchai, a popular face in her home country, Thailand, who will be making her Bollywood debut in Ishq Actually later this year, as the second lead opposite actor Rajiv Khandelwal.
Mitchai, who has a very successful pop music career in Thailand, and is in Mumbai to shoot her first international music video, grew up watching Bollywood movies and is well versed in the Indian classical dance form, kathak.
Mitchai told this correspondent that her single, Superstar, from the forthcoming album of the same name, showcases her musical journey from the green room to the world stage. “This is my first music video packed with dance and funky grooves. I’m also fusing the Likay tradition into it, so that people will get a chance to see what Likay is all about.”
Likay, or music drama, is a traditional performing art of central Thailand and the singer has been practicing this folk opera since she was 5 years of age.
Today her name is synonymous with Likay back in Thailand.
When on a Likay tour, Mitchai puts a Thai-Indian fusion into her performance, catering to her Indian fans back home. This genre of Thai-Indian music and dance was well received and has given her an opportunity to be part of the Indian entertainment industry.
While the concept for the songs is her own, she has roped in Sheryl Verghese, Eddie Avil and Jaspreet Jasz to pen the lyrics for her, while Eddie Avil (forthcoming movie Sixteen) has composed the music on the album. The dance is choreographed by Dhiraj Bakshi.
