ความมหัศจรรย์ของปลากัดป่า ซึ่งเป็นต้นตระกูลของปลากัดสวยงามในทุกวันนี้จากธรรมชาติที่ถูกนำมาเลี้ยงเป็นปลาพื้นบ้าน มีความแตกต่างกันทั้งทางด้านกายภาพและถิ่นที่อยู่อาศัย ความสวยงามด้านสีสันที่ต่างกันนี้ได้ถูกนำมาเจียระไน พัฒนาด้วยภูมิปัญญาของคนไทยตั้งแต่อดีตจนปัจจุบันมีปลากัดที่หลากหลายสีสันและรูปทรงออกมาให้เห็นตามจินตนาการทุกปี โดยปัจจุบันประเทศไทยมีการขึ้นทะเบียนทั้งหมด 5 สายพันธุ์ และยังมีสายพันธุ์ย่อยที่นักวิจัยกำลังให้ความสนใจในการขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นปลากัดสายพันธุ์ใหม่

 

The magic of wild betta Which is the ancestor of today's beautiful betta fish from nature that has been raised as a local fish. There are differences in both physical and habitat. This beauty of different colors has been cut. Developed with the wisdom of Thai people from the past until the present, there are various colors and shapes of fighting fish that come out as imagined every year. Currently, all five species of betta are registered in Thailand, and there are also subspecies that researchers are interested in registering as a new species of fighting fish.

 

“ปลากัด” หรือเบ็ตต้า (ชื่อทางวิทยาศาสตร์ Betta splendens) กล่าวกันว่าได้ชื่อมาจากนักรบเอเชียโบราณ “เบ็ตตาช” (Bettah) เพราะการต่อสู้อันดุเดือดของมัน การกัดปลาเป็นกีฬาที่มีชื่อเสียงของไทยนับตั้งแต่อดีต มีการจัดตั้งบ่อนกัดปลาเพื่อใช้เป็นเครื่องมือเก็บภาษี นอกจากนี้ยังพบหลักฐานที่บันทึกถึงการนำปลากัดไทยไปเลี้ยงในยุโรปเมื่อปี พ.ศ.2414

 

“Betta” or Betta (scientific name Betta splendens) is said to have taken its name from the ancient Asian warrior “Bettah” because of its fierce fighting. Fishing has been a famous sport in Thailand since ancient times. Fish ponds were set up as a tool for collecting taxes. There is also documented evidence of the introduction of Thai fighting fish into Europe in 1871.

 

ในแง่ของการส่งออก ปลากัดถือเป็นสัตว์เศรษฐกิจที่สำคัญ โดยตัวเลขการส่งออกปลากัดระหว่างปี พ.ศ.2556-2560 มีค่าเฉลี่ยอยู่ที่ 20.85 ล้านตัวต่อปี มีมูลค่าการส่งออกเฉลี่ยที่ 115.45 ล้านบาทต่อปี มีตลาดส่งออกปลากัดไทย 5 อันดับแรก คือสหรัฐอเมริกา ฝรั่งเศส สิงคโปร์ จีน อิหร่าน และยังส่งไปขายในอีกกว่า 90 ประเทศทั่วโลก
