✦ Thai Traditional Costume in the reign of King Rama I - to King Rama III (A.D. 1782 - 1851), early Rattanakosin central Thais dressed as same as Ayutthaya period.
The Royal Thai dress in this era, The women in the palace such as the queen, Chao Chom (royal lady), concubines, or royal daughters, the lower part of the body is dressed in long and pleated fabrics, using "Pha lai yang: ผ้าลายอย่าง" (Siamese chintz) from India.
The most popular pha lai yang or Indian chintz was made to order for the Siam royal court. Indian textiles have long roots in Thai history which are supported by actual evidence and by stories of various groups of people. Pha Lai Yang (Siamese chintz), which was once reserved for the aristocracy in the late Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin period and whose decorative patterns denote rank.
✦ The upper part of the body is a silk mandarin collar shirt with buttons, and sleeves up to the cuff, however, if wearing a shirt, a sabai is always wrapped over it.
The Sabai, or Pha Biang(shift cloth), is a shawl-like garment or breast cloth.
A Sabai is worn by both women and men. It is a long piece of silk that is about a foot wide and is draped diagonally around the chest. by covering one shoulder while its end drops behind the back.
