The Lao Krang (Thai: ลาวครั่ง, RTGS: Lao Khrang) are a sub-group of the Lao ethnic group. Also known as the Tai Krang (Thai: ไทครั่ง), they speak a dialect of the Lao language that is not too different from the modern Lao/Isan languages of Laos and Isan.
The Lao Krang should not be confused with the Tai Khang (spelt the same as 'Thai Krang' in Thai) who are a closely related people inhabiting northeastern Laos.
Lao Krang or Tai Krang lives in many provinces in Central and Northern Thailand including Sukhothai, Nakhon Pathom, Kanchanaburi, Suphanburi, Ratchaburi, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Nakhon Sawan, Phichit, and Kamphaeng Phet.
Hand-woven textiles of the Lao Khrang are unique and expresse a long-held wisdom as well as culture and lifestyle of the ethnic group. Additionally, it has preserved a lot of important historical evidence of the group. For instance, the Lao Khrang group migrating from Phu Khang Mountain Range in Luang Phrabang in the Thonburi Period retained a unique weaving culture.
The dye is mainly derived from shellac. The dyeing process is conducted only once and the yarns are woven into cloth by using hand-operated looms. Their designs are culturally unique to the group. Presently, social trends have changed and the dyeing process has also been changed.
Artificial dyes are used instead of those from shellac because they are easily available and last longer. Moreover, traditional designs have also been changed or even disappeared due to the social trend that focuses on commercial weaving.
