ชาวล้านนา หรือ "ชาวไทยวน” ซึ่งเรียกตัวเองว่า “คนเมือง”
The Tai Yuan is also known as the ethnic Northern Thais or “Khon Mueng”.
The Tai Yuan is part of the bigger Tai people group. About 90 million people of the Tai race are estimated to be scattered in the Mekong Region. Tai Yuan also known as the ethnic Northern Thais are a subgroup of the Tai Race.

The Tai Yuan were founders of the Lanna Kingdom, which was tremendous and spanned Northern parts of Thailand, and surrounding areas in Burma, Laos, and southwest China.

 Thai Lanna dress of the North was Originally influenced by Myanmar, during the period when the northern region was a colony of Myanmar and blended with Tai Yuan, Tai Lue, Tai Khoen, and Tai Yai. It is expected that the Lanna people in the past Cotton and silk fabrics are popular, to be used as a garment for offerings to monks to give alms to the poor and a product sent to sell to other kingdoms such as white sandalwood cloth, Red sandalwood cloth, Champa flower cloth, plain cloth, and Gumphon cloth, etc.

 

 Lanna women like to wear the oblique cloth like a sabai called “Hom Pha Swai Laeng” and a sarong, while men wear long loincloths like a loincloth and a button-up Chinese collar shirt. If the boss is wearing a silk shirt like a gown over another layer, 2 pieces of cloth are wrapped around the waist, which are tied over the Toi cloth and the shirt.

Therefore brought the dress of women in Bangkok and spread out, plus at that time there was trade with Western nations, therefore, blending together to become the identity of the northern people today

 

 ชุดไทยล้านนาภาคเหนือเดิมได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากพม่า ในช่วงที่ทางเหนือตกเป็นประเทศราชของพม่า และผสมผสานกับชาวไตยวน ไทลื้อ ไทเขินและไทใหญ่ คาดว่าคนล้านนาในอดีตนิยมทอผ้าฝ้าย และผ้าไหมขึ้นเพื่อใช้เป็นเครื่องนุ่มห่มสำหรับถวายพระ ให้ทานแก่คนจน และเป็นสินค้าส่งไปขายยังอาณาจักรอื่นๆ เช่น ผ้าสีจันทน์ขาว ผ้าสีจันทน์แดง ผ้าสีดอกจำปา ผ้าธรรมดา และผ้ากัมพล เป็นต้น

 

 หญิงชาวล้านนานิยมห่มผ้าเฉียงแบบสไบเรียกว่า “ห่มผ้าสะหว้ายแล่ง” นุ่งผ้าซิ่น ส่วนผู้ชายจะนุ่งผ้าต้อยขนาดยาวแบบโจงกระเบน สวมเสื้อคอจีนติดกระดุม ถ้าเป็นเจ้านายจะสวมเสื้อไหมคล้ายเสื้อครุยทับอีกชั้นหนึ่ง มีผ้าพันเอว ๒ ผืน คือ รัดทับผ้าต้อยและเสื้อ

 

 พระราชชายาเจ้าดารารัศมี ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๕ ได้รับอนุญาติให้เสด็จมาประทับที่เชียงใหม่ จึงนำการแต่งกายของหญิงในกรุงเทพฯ มาด้วย และแพร่หลายออกไป บวกกับในตอนนั้นมีการค้ากับชาติตะวันตก จึงผสมผสานกันกลายมาเป็นอัตลักษณ์ของชาวเหนือในปัจจุบัน
