✦ The Tai Lue or Tai Lü people (Chinese: 傣仂, Lao: ໄຕລື້, Thai: ไทลื้อ, Vietnamese: Người) are an ethnic group of China, Laos, Thailand, Burma, and Vietnam. They speak the Southwestern Tai language.
The Tai Lue possesses an ancient script, still used by Buddhists in the region. The Tai language of the Lu people is spoken by about 700,000 people in Southeast Asia.
Their name is also sometimes spelled Tai Lü or Dai Lue. They call them “Dai”. They come from the Xishuangbanna district (สิบสองปันนา) in Yunnan Province, China. This area used to be known as Sipsongpanna. It means Twelve (sipsong) township (pan) and rice fields (na). Eleven of these communities (Muang) are situated on the west bank of the Mekong River.
✦ The Lue are religious and very good at weaving cotton cloth. The Lue style of weaving and motifs, “Pha Lai Nam Lai”, are famous and are in great demand. They still maintain their traditional way of life. The older generation can perform Lue folk dances, sing and play Lue music. A few old men know the Lue script and the writing system, so they are literate in their own language.
The younger generation is trilingual, i.e. they can speak Lue, Kham Mueang, and Thai.
