♦️ การนำลูก และ หลานสาวทูลเกล้าถวายตัวให้เป็นบาทบริจาริกาของกษัตริย์ เป็นไปเพื่อพยุงฐานะทางเศรษฐกิจสังคม และการเมืองของสมาชิกในตระกูลตนด้วยเช่นกัน จึงทำให้พระราชสำนัก จึงคับคั่งไปด้วยสุภาพสตรีมากหน้าหลายตา คอยปรนนิบัติรับใช้กษัตริย์ ซึ่งการถวายตัวเป็นมเหสีของกษัตริย์ จะต้องอยู่ในธรรมเนียมอันเคร่งครัด.

ตามคติความเชื่อที่สืบทอดกันมาตั้งสมัยแต่โบราณนั้น พระมหากษัตริย์เปรียบดั่งองค์สมมติเทพ ซึ่งองค์สมมติเทพนั่นก็คือ องค์พระนารายณ์ที่อวตารลงมาบำบัดทุกข์บำรุงสุขแก่ประชาราษฎรบนโลกมนุษย์ ดังนั้นเหล่าสตรีผู้ที่มาเป็นมเหสี สนม นางใน จึงเปรียบเสมือนนางฟ้าเทพธิดาต่างๆ บนสรวงสวรรค์ตามลงมาคอยปรนนิบัติรับใช้ ซึ่งเหล่านางฟ้าเทพธิดาทั้งหลายจะได้รับการพรรณาว่ามีผิวขาวนวล คิ้วโก่งดั่งคันศร ผมสีดำขลับ ปากแดงดั่งสีชาด ซึ่งเป็นความงามในอุดมคติของเหล่านางฟ้าทั้งหลาย ตามความเชื่อจากคัมภีร์ไตรภูมิพระร่วงที่มีมาตั้งแต่สมัยสุโขทัย ทำให้นางฟ้าในอุดมคติไทยจะมีลักษณะแบบนี้มาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

✦ ดังนั้นสตรีใดได้รับพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าให้ถวายตัวเป็นบาทบริจาแก่พระมหากษัตริย์แล้ว ตามโบราณราชประเพณีจึงจำเป็นต้องจัดเตรียมเครื่องแต่งตัวเครื่องประดับและที่สำคัญคือเครื่องแต่งหน้าให้ประหนึ่งว่าเป็นดั่งนางฟ้าเทพธิดา นอกจากนี้การทาตัวด้วยสีขาวนั้นก็เพื่อจะได้มองเห็นรูปร่างและใบหน้าได้ชัดๆ เพราะสมัยก่อนมีแต่เทียนไข ต่อให้จุดเป็นร้อยเล่มยังไงก็ไม่สว่างแบบแสงไฟปัจจุบัน.
