Sabai (สไบ) is a shawl-like breast cloth in Thailand. The word sabai originates from the Austronesian term *cahebay, meaning “to hang,” with roots in south China around 5,000-4,500 BCE. In Thailand, evidence of the sabai appears in Dvaravati stucco reliefs showing five women musicians wearing sabai while playing instruments, demonstrating its long history since the 6th century.

 

Thai national and traditional costumes have had a strong influence on neighboring Cambodia. After 2018, Cambodia's traditional attire began to copy Thai styles, influenced by the popular Thai period drama Bupphe Sanniwat (or Love Destiny), which showcased ancient Thai costumes and culture and gained significant popularity in Cambodia.
