: A Royal Hall of Reverence and Memory
Shivalai Maha Prasat is located at the corner of the Shivalai Garden, on the northeastern side adjacent to the Inner Court of the Grand Palace, near Ratchasamararn Gate. It was commissioned by His Majesty King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) on the original site of the Prapat Phiphit Hall, within the Abhinov Nives complex.
The construction of Shivalai Maha Prasat was prompted by the royal wish to enshrine bronze royal statues of four former kings of the Chakri Dynasty—King Rama I to King Rama IV—who had already passed away. These statues were created to serve as objects of annual royal homage beginning in 1878 (B.E. 2421). At that time, there was no permanent location that was both secure and worthy of their royal dignity.
Consequently, King Chulalongkorn graciously ordered the construction of Shivalai Maha Prasat in 1878. The building was completed in 1882 (B.E. 2425), the same year that Bangkok celebrated its centennial anniversary. Upon completion, the royal statues of the four kings were solemnly enshrined within this hall.
Later, during the reign of His Majesty King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), the royal statues of the four kings were ceremonially transferred to Prasat Phra Thep Bidorn, where they have remained enshrined to this day.
Shivalai Maha Prasat thus stands as an important architectural and historical monument, reflecting royal devotion, remembrance of past monarchs, and the continuity of the Chakri Dynasty.
