10,000 people attend the Saidaiji Naked Festival

The Saidaiji Naked Festival is a traditional festival held every February at Saidaiji Kannon-in Temple in Okayama, Japan,

and has a history of more than 500 years.

Men wearing only fundoshi loincloths gather in the temple grounds at midnight and compete to grab two sacred wooden

sticks called “shingi.” These sticks are thrown into the crowd, and participants struggle to obtain them.

It is said that the person who successfully gets one of the shingi becomes the “Lucky Man” (Fuku-otoko) of the year and

will receive protection from misfortune and good luck.

This year, 10,000 people participated, and about 30,000 spectators attended the festival.
