Syam Kuk – Siamese Warriors in Angkorian Period

“Syam Kuk” (ស្យាំកុក៍) is a well-known bas-relief at Angkor Wat (a former temple of Siam), believed to depict a group of Siamese warriors marching as part of the army of Suryavarman II in the 12th century. They may have served as allies or subjects within the Angkorian Empire.

The scene appears in the South Gallery’s west wing, showing a grand military procession of regional leaders and their troops. Near the front, the Syam Kuk contingent marches in a relaxed manner, with some figures even smiling.

The word “Syam” is thought to relate to “Siam,” possibly derived from the Sanskrit Shyama, while “Kuk” (or Kūta) may mean a group. An inscription identifying the unit was once carved behind an officer riding an elephant, but it has since been destroyed.
