Phuang Malai, the traditional Thai flower garland which is often given as offerings or for good luck. The Phuang Malai is a unique symbol of what has been described as “Thainess”.
“Malai” means a flower garland. “Phuang” signifies “binding together” both of the garland itself and between the giver and receiver. Curiously, a car steering wheel is known in Thai as Phuang Malai, which is probably due to its similar shape to one common type of garland.

In Thai, the word "Phuang" means a ‘string’ or ‘bunch’ and ‘malai’ means ‘garland’. We have to be careful when talking about ‘Phuang Malai’ though because these same words can also mean ‘steering wheel’.

The Thai garlands are created by stringing various flower combinations together that depend on seasonal blooms and on the artist’s imagination. The mixture usually includes one or more fragrant flowers like jasmine and rosebuds. It is said that the first recordings of this kind of Thai floral art dates back to the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). He mentioned fresh flower garlands in his work about the “Royal ceremony in 12 months”. Later in the Rattanakosin Era, the Thai flower garland became a ceremonial object on special occasions.
